Zechariah 13:2-9. “Strike the shepherd”. Jesus is the shepherd.
Recap – where are we, last week, God would pour out his spirt of mercy and grace, that people could see the one they pieced one. That God would provide a fountain, that would provide cleaning from sin and unrighteousness. God, Jesus, Spirt. No, redemption if the Spirt dose not move for us to see Jesus, and come to God.
Hebrew story telling in circles, - Latin – western – linear chronological
I was reminded about that because this week’s text and the themes seem to be the same as last weeks, and themes that Zechariah has talked about before. (I am honest I don’t know if this is the case but it might be). OT: Creation accounts, judges, Psalms, Proverbs, Prophets, words 3 times etc. Holy, Holy, Holy NT: revelation, the 4 gospels.
Verses 2-6 Totally removal! (Mica, Jermiah EZ, said this will happen).
The LORD of hosts, will cut off the idols and remove the prophets and the spirt of uncleanness, so much the idols will not be remembered anymore. Verse 2– it brings echoes of exodus and the laws that God gave, don’t mention other Gods, verse 3, a warning and command that was not carried out, and the nation fell in to idol worship and to follow false prophets, in Deut, 13:1-11. The father and mother will not let the son tell lies but instead kill their son. A strong contrast to what happened to the nation of Gods people. That will make the false prophet hide, instead of sticking out, in special clothe, ready to deceive people. Instead they will hide and say he is a different person, even one sold, if people ask about his wounds he will say my friends gave me the wounds commentators say the wounds are likely from idol worship. A total removal of Idols and false prophesies.
In 7 we have God calling on the sword, against his shepherd, - the one that stands next to me/God. (God calls for the sword against Jesus, that stands next to God).
What would the people of Zechariahs time think; how will this give hope, like last time it was God providing for them a way of escape. From what comes next, God will cut off 2/3 of and perish, 1/3 will be left. They will be refined by fire, tested as gold, they will call upon God, his name, and God will answer the, and call you are my people. – the people will respond the LORD is my God.
Good news, bad news, good news, bad news, but God will provide, and the people will call out to God and God will hear like in chapter 1, and they shall be his people. 1/3. (The 2/3 die). A high incentive to follow God, and his law, and not worship idols or listen to false prophets. A future hope of Messiah, cleansing testing and refined as going true fire. (And not be like the 2/3). But by grace the 1/3.
But what about us what are we to see to understand?
God had in history, judged people, Noha, Sodom and Gomora, Egypt, the people of the promised land, in the times of the judges, the times of the kings, God’s people. This also shows that God will judge all people, after what we lived for and to. Judgment is coming, - But God has shown that there is a way not to be judged, by God provided for people, as he was pierced this week struck, God came to be with us but we rejected God.
Calling strike, the shepherd and the sheep will be scattered, PPT Matthew 26:30-32 and Mark 14:26-28, Jesus said this passage was about Him, that he is the shepherd, that will be struck and all the disciples will leave him… Even Peter.
Then God, that was pierced last week, God in Jesus, now God will have Jesus struck, so that Jesus will be left alone, and the piercing on the cross will happen, the disciples will flee, and the fountain of Jesus blood will be open for who ever will come to him, cleansing from sin and unrighteousness. All a work of the Lord of hosts, but death was not the end… As Jesus said, but after I am raised, I will go before you to Galilee, yes the shepherd was struck, but he was tried convicted, for saying he was God, the messiah, died, and was pierced, but rose again, death could not hold Jesus, he had no sin, he choses to die for other peoples sin, idol worship and rejection of God, that they might come to God, to him, by Jesus, after the Spirt has opened the eyes of them, for convicting them of sin, righteousness and judgment.
Jesus is not in doubt, nether is Mark and Matthew, that wrote what Jesus said, and Matthew, saw him after he had risen. But rejecting the Lord Jesus the true Shepheard, the messiah, no one wilk survive that, then if God’s people does not see, obey, they will be destroyed, salvation is only found in Jesus Christ. PPT Acts.
There is great hope in Jesus Christ, hebw 2. How great a salvation.
This season and every season for us is one of worshiping, by Jesus by the Holy sprit to the praise of the father, for the great gift of salvation, by Jesus, - God provided, all we needed.
And we can ask that God will pure out his grace and mercy on more people that they also might see Jesus as Lord God savior. To his glory and for there salvation and God, they will with us worship, our Lord Jesus.
